The temple is situated just 4 km inland from Unawatuna. There are buses going this way. But from LimeCabanas there is another route to reach Yattagala Raja Maha Viharaya with more scenic views. You can take delight in them if you go by scooter or a tuk-tuk. It is a nice ride to drive with a light breeze. The Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya is a hushed rock temple with a 9 m reclining Buddha. The temple is one of the oldest temples in the Galle District. The buildings of temple stand under the rocks. That is why it is called yatagala, “under the stone” in Sinhalese. The murals covering the walls are painted in the typical style of the Kandyan period. Monks have been living here for at least 1500 years. You’ll seldom find crowds here, which only adds to the appeal. As you ascend the long flights of stairs, there are good views over the rice fields.
