Rumassala Mountain and Jungle beach
Greatest coastal views in the south of Sri Lanka
The area derives its name from the hill Rumassala. In the past, the name of this area was Buona Vista, reminding us of the period when the Spanish and other ships were anchoring before taking spices, precious stones and minerals to Europe.
Both the lovers of ocean and forest wild life will find here many species, which will amaze them. Among these species there are birds, reptiles and mammals, as well as rare medicinal plants.
According to the ancient Sanskrit epic, Hanuman, the Indian monkey warrior god, required several medicinal herbs in order to treat the wounded in his army during his battle against the demon king Ravana of Sri Lanka.
Unable to find the herbs on the Island, Hanuman returned to India and brought back a piece of the Himalayas with the required plants but accidently dropped it at Rumassala. Local villagers attribute this as the source of many rare medicinal plants found in the area to this day.
There is a coral reef where you can go snorkelling, diving or swimming in shallow water. These sport activities become more and more popular with both local and foreign tourists.
The Dewata beach, a part of this area, is well known for surfing, and is suitable especially for beginners.
Situated almost on the cliff of the mountain, there is a Buddhist Pagoda, which is called Peace Pagoda, because the Japanese and Sri Lankans government built it together.
Visiting the pagoda, you can enjoy beautiful views of the city of Galle and the whole Galle bay.
